A 24-year-old truck driver is responsible for the collapse of the sign on highway 401 which lead to a closure of all the westbound lanes of the highway.

A 24-year-old truck driver is responsible for the collapse of the sign on highway 401 which lead to a closure of all the westbound lanes of the highway.

As per Ontario Provincial Police, “The 24-year-old driver of a truck that crashed into and subsequently brought down an overhead sign on Highway 401 Friday morning has been located and charged.”

The officers claimed that the truck collided with the sign just before 8 a.m., near Brock Street in Whitby.

In a video, Sgt. Schmidt mentioned that “according to witnesses, the driver of the truck stopped after striking the sign and got out of their vehicle before re-entering the truck and fleeing the scene.”

In a video posted on twitter, Sgt. Schmidt announced that the truck driver and the vehicle had been located.

He said, “Thanks to the tips that came in from witnesses…Whitby OPP were able to locate the vehicle as well as the driver.” He further added, “Without your help, without your assistance in making this investigation move forward, we would likely not be at this place right now.”

The driver has been charged with careless driving, overweight vehicle, and fail to remain.

The westbound lanes that were closed due to the collapse, have been reopened.
