After years of planning and anticipation, the Goreway Bridge, a crucial infrastructure project aimed at alleviating heavy traffic in north Mississauga, is well on track to open to vehicles in December 2024.

City of Mississauga Ward 5 Councillor Carolyn Parrish took to social media to announce that the construction of the $40-million Goreway Bridge is tentatively scheduled to commence on August 23, marking a significant milestone in the long-sought endeavor.

The overpass is expected to be completed by December 2024, offering much-needed relief to the chronic traffic congestion that has long plagued the Malton area of Mississauga.

Goreway Drive serves as a vital collector roadway, providing essential north-south connectivity for commuters, commercial vehicles, and emergency services between Mississauga and Brampton. However, the major route intersects the busy CN tracks approximately 300 meters north of Brandon Gate Dr., resulting in traffic bottlenecks due to the more than 50 freight trains crossing daily.

The final contracts for the Goreway Bridge were successfully signed on May 11, and the project was awarded to Alliance Verdi Civil Inc. of Bolton, with external consultants overseeing the project management.

The initiative to build the Goreway Bridge in Malton dates back three decades and reached a significant milestone this past spring with the signing of a three-way agreement between CN Rail and the cities of Mississauga and Brampton. The project, named the Goreway Drive Grade Separation, aims to address congestion issues and is hailed as a crucial step in enhancing traffic flow and connectivity in the region.

The cost of the bridge, which exceeds $40 million, will be shared among the three partners involved — CN, and the cities of Mississauga and Brampton.

Once construction commences, a temporary 16-month closure of Goreway Drive will be in effect to facilitate the completion of the project. Despite facing various hurdles over the years, such as initial land ownership complexities, the determination to realize this much-needed infrastructure has remained unwavering.

As the Goreway Bridge project progresses, residents and commuters can look forward to a more streamlined transportation system that promises to ease traffic congestion and enhance connectivity between the two vibrant cities of Mississauga and Brampton.
