Western Australian public schools to teach Punjabi soon

According to a statement by the Western Australian government, Punjabi will soon be taught in public schools across the region from pre-primary classes to Year 12.
“Punjabi will be fully developed in Western Australia by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority for pre-primary to Year 12 students,” stated Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery.
“With more than 190 languages spoken throughout Western Australia, linguistic diversity is a great strength of our State and provides a range of social, cultural and economic benefits,” she added.

The development of the curriculum and the support materials is set to commence this year.
The syllabus for pre-primary to Year 10 is set to be available in 2024. Additionally, ATAR Course Examinations for Year 11 students is said to start in 2025. Alongside Punjabi, inclusion of Hindi ,Korean, and Tamil in the public school curriculum was also announced back in 2021.
“I am pleased to see the ongoing expansion of languages curriculum for WA students, and the development of Punjabi curriculum is particularly fitting given it could support students in key future employment opportunities,” stated Ellery in a statement by the Western Australian Government.
