Peel Regional Police holds free event in Mississauga to prevent catalytic converter theft

Peel Regional Police on Saturday organized a free event to help vehicle owners prevent catalytic converter theft.

“Head to the City of Mississauga transportation yard at 3185 Mavis Road in #Mississauga from 10 am – 5 pm TODAY and get #PRP to etch your catalytic converter to deter thieves from stealing them. #ProtectYourProperty,” Peel Police tweeted about the event.

A catalytic converter is a vehicle part that helps in reducing pollution emissions. It is often targeted by auto parts thieves due to valuable precious metals like palladium, platinum and rhodium that are used to make it.

Those who attended the free event were able to get their licence plate number or vehicle identification number (VIN) engraved in their catalytic converter so that stolen converters can be traced back to their original cars if found.

Many residents from in and around the region came to the event due to the upsurge in catalytic converter theft in the region.

Peel Regional Police had previously warned residents of the rise in the auto-parts theft in November of last year.
