The federal Liberals are withdrawing a controversial new definition of an assault-style weapon from their gun bill.
The amendment would have defined which types of firearms should be prohibited in Canada and would have added dozens of new semi-automatic rifles and shotguns to the list.
It sparked outrage in many rural areas of Canada, with hunters claiming it criminalized weapons they frequently use legally for hunting.
Many of their own MPs pressed the Liberals to change or withdraw the new definition of prohibited weapons.
The Liberal motion to withdraw the amendment was unanimously approved by MPs on the public safety committee. Bill C-21 was introduced in May of last year with the goal of restricting gun access for people who pose a danger to themselves or others, as well as expanding measures affecting the government’s regulated ban on handguns.
