Over 100 Passengers Stuck on VIA Rail Train Due to Mechanical Issues in the Greater Toronto Area

On Friday afternoon, more than 100 passengers found themselves stuck on a VIA Rail train in the Greater Toronto Area due to mechanical issues. The train, which was travelling from Toronto to Ottawa, came to a halt in Oshawa, Ontario with all 133 passengers on board. According to VIA Rail, the halt in service was caused by mechanical issues that were not disclosed in detail. In a statement released on Friday, VIA Rail informed passengers and staff of the situation and outlined their plan to resolve the issue.

To assist the affected train, another train – the 45 – arrived at the location and shared its equipment. Passengers and staff on board both trains were advised of the situation and the rescue plan, which involved the use of shared equipment to help move the affected train.

After a delay of about one hour and 24 minutes, train 42 resumed service, much to the relief of the stranded passengers. This incident adds to a string of delays and disruptions that VIA Rail has faced in recent times. Last year during the holiday season, a winter storm caused several disruptions on the VIA Rail network, with one instance of a tree falling on a train car that caused passengers to be stuck onboard for a grueling 18 hours. While the exact nature of the mechanical issues that caused the delay on Friday has not been disclosed, it is clear that VIA Rail will need to take steps to ensure the safety and reliability of its services going forward.
