15 Killed in Tragic Crash on Trans-Canada Highway Near Carberry, Manitoba

Carberry, MB – Emergency crews and air ambulances have been dispatched to the scene of a devastating crash on the Trans-Canada Highway near Carberry, Manitoba. The Manitoba RCMP has described the incident as a very serious crash, and sources have informed CTV News that at least 15 people have lost their lives.

The collision occurred at the intersection of Highway 1 and Highway 5, close to Carberry, a community located approximately two hours west of Winnipeg. The severity of the crash has prompted the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg to declare a code orange, indicating a mass casualty incident.

In response, Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg, along with hospitals in Prairie Mountain Health and the Winnipeg Health Region, have prepared to receive patients involved in the event or patients who may be transferred to create additional capacity at Manitoba’s tertiary center, as stated by Shared Health.

At the crash site, response teams are actively assisting and transporting patients, while emergency department, surgical, and critical care teams at Health Sciences Centre and Brandon Regional Health Centre are prepared to provide the necessary care for incoming patients.

Eyewitness Tracy Leitch, who was driving along the Trans-Canada Highway around noon on Thursday, described the scene she encountered. She observed a semi-truck with extensive front-end damage and emitting smoke, as well as another severely damaged vehicle.

Leitch expressed her shock at the magnitude of the crash, stating that there was virtually nothing left of one of the vehicles. She confessed to feeling overwhelmed, on the verge of tears, and nearly experiencing a panic attack. Witnessing such a catastrophic accident left her feeling sickened.

As a result of the crash, a three-kilometer stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway has been closed in both directions near the crash site. Manitoba RCMP are urging drivers to avoid the area. Further details regarding the crash will be provided by the police.
