SIU Ends Investigation into Mississauga Incident Involving Injury to Man in Police Custody

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has concluded its investigation into an incident that took place in Mississauga earlier this year, in which a 33-year-old man sustained an injury while in police custody.

According to the SIU, on April 2, the man became enraged when his father withdrew as his bail surety. A surety, as defined by Legal Aid Ontario, is an individual who appears in court and agrees to supervise an accused person while they are out on bail. The surety also assumes the responsibility of paying the court if the accused violates their bail conditions or fails to attend court hearings.

The SIU report reveals that the man, upon learning that he would remain in police custody for an extended period, expressed his anger by repeatedly striking and kicking fixtures in his cell, resulting in a broken hand.

The man himself admitted that he was solely responsible for his injury. As stated in the report, “On the available evidence, there remains nothing substantial to investigate in relation to any potential criminal liability of the police officers involved in the man’s injury.”

The SIU, an independent government agency tasked with investigating incidents involving death, serious injury, sexual assault, or the discharge of a firearm by officials, has thus concluded the investigation.
