The Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has unveiled fresh information regarding the individuals involved in a tragic head-on collision in Whitby that occurred on Monday evening.

As per the SIU’s statement, the victims encompassed a 60-year-old male and a 55-year-old female, both hailing from India.

Tragically, the couple’s three-month-old grandson was among those who perished in the multi-vehicle crash, prompting the closure of Highway 401 near Highway 412 for an extended period.

The SIU disclosed that the infant’s parents, a 33-year-old father and a 27-year-old mother, were occupants of the same vehicle and were subsequently transported to a medical facility. Notably, the mother sustained severe injuries, according to the SIU.

Additionally, the agency revealed that a cargo van involved in the collision contained two individuals. Regrettably, the 21-year-old driver of the van succumbed to his injuries at the crash site, while a 38-year-old male passenger was hospitalized for treatment of serious injuries.

Autopsies for all victims were conducted in Toronto on Wednesday.

Authorities disclosed that the fatal pursuit originated from a liquor store robbery in Bowmanville and culminated approximately 20 minutes later, when the suspect engaged Durham police in a high-speed pursuit against oncoming traffic on Highway 401.

The SIU has appointed two subject officials and four witness officials to oversee the investigation.

Currently, a team consisting of seven investigators, one forensic investigator, and one collision reconstructionist remains diligently engaged in probing the case, as stated by the SIU.

Established as an independent entity, the SIU intervenes to investigate incidents involving law enforcement that result in fatalities, severe injuries, or allegations of sexual assault.
