A new pothole-filled street in Hamilton has taken the infamous title of Ontario’s worst road, according to the Canadian Automotive Association (CAA). Aberdeen Avenue, plagued by potholes, poor maintenance, and heavy traffic congestion, has earned the top spot on CAA’s 2024 Worst Roads list.

Released on Tuesday, the list highlights the province’s most troublesome streets, with Eglinton Avenue West in Toronto coming in second. Eglinton Avenue West is a perennial contender, often appearing on the annual list due to its ongoing construction and related issues. Last year’s “winner,” Barton Street in Hamilton, slipped to third place this year.

The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) dominated the list with four additional streets: Hurontario Street in Mississauga, and Toronto’s Bloor Street West, Finch Avenue West, and Lake Shore Boulevard East.

“We do know that some of these long ones with big projects on them, like Eglinton Avenue West, do take a long time to get fixed,” said Teresa Di Felice, vice-president of government and community relations for CAA South Central Ontario, in an interview with CP24. She emphasized that municipal officials are aware of the issues and are actively seeking solutions. “They don’t want that dubious distinction but they recognize the pain points.”

The CAA’s annual Worst Roads campaign has been running for over two decades, encouraging Ontario residents to vote on the roads most in need of repair. This initiative aims to highlight the infrastructure issues that communities face and prompt action from local governments.

“Roads, sidewalks, and bike paths are only some of the things municipal governments fund with limited revenue sources,” Di Felice stated in a news release. She underscored the importance of community feedback in determining where investments should be made. “CAA Worst Roads is a forum to do that.”

With Aberdeen Avenue now leading the list, the spotlight is on Hamilton and other GTA areas to address their critical road maintenance challenges. The CAA campaign serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for infrastructure investment and the vital role of community input in shaping transportation priorities.
