Iran Unleashes Ballistic Missile Barrage on Israel, More than 200 Missles Fired
In a dramatic escalation of tensions, Iran launched ballistic missiles at Israel on Tuesday, setting off warning sirens across the country, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The missile strike comes as part of a growing conflict between the two nations, raising concerns about the potential for further violence in the region.
Eyewitnesses described seeing orange fire streaking across the sky over Israel, as the country’s aerial defense system sprang into action. Various sources based in Tel Aviv and Tyre, Lebanon, reported witnessing multiple missiles being fired. Smaller streaks of light, believed to be Israel’s missile defense system intercepting incoming threats, were also seen illuminating the night sky.
In video footage captured during the attack, loud booms could be heard, though it remains unclear whether these sounds were the result of clashing missiles in the air or Iranian missiles hitting Israeli territory. Despite the intense nature of the assault, Israel reported no fatalities from the missile barrage.
Earlier in the day, U.S. intelligence warned that Iran was preparing a ballistic missile strike targeting Israel. This information was shared by both a senior White House official and a Defense Department representative, speaking to NBC News. The U.S. National Security Council spokesperson confirmed that President Joe Biden had authorized military support to help Israel defend itself, including permission to “shoot down missiles targeting Israel.”
The missile attack follows Israel’s recent military operations in Lebanon, which included the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and a ground invasion into southern Lebanon. Analysts believe these actions significantly impacted Iran’s proxy forces in the region, potentially triggering Iran’s retaliation.
