Indian Diplomats ‘On Notice’ in Canada, Says Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly

Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Mélanie Joly, has made it clear that Indian diplomats in the country are “on notice” following heightened diplomatic tensions between Canada and India. This statement follows the recent expulsion of six Indian diplomats from Canada, a move that has escalated the ongoing standoff between the two nations.

“They’re clearly on notice,” Joly stated when asked whether further expulsions could be expected. She emphasized that Canada will not tolerate diplomats violating international law or jeopardizing the safety of its citizens. “We won’t tolerate any diplomats that are in contravention of the Vienna Convention. This applies to diplomats from any country who may pose risks to Canadians,” Joly added.

The diplomatic spat took a more severe turn earlier this week when both Canada and India expelled each other’s diplomats. Ottawa’s action was reportedly linked to a “targeted campaign against Canadian citizens” allegedly orchestrated by agents connected to the Indian government.

While such tensions are not uncommon in international relations, Joly referred to the latest developments as unprecedented in Canadian history. “The decision to make these allegations public was an extraordinary measure by the RCMP,” she said, alluding to the seriousness of the matter.

Minister Joly highlighted the broader issue of “transnational repression” during her remarks, underscoring that this is a growing global concern. “This type of repression cannot happen on Canadian soil,” she insisted. She cited similar incidents in Europe, where Russian agents have been implicated in activities in countries like Germany and the United Kingdom.

Joly’s statements come as Canadian law enforcement authorities are investigating the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, which took place in Surrey, British Columbia. Allegations have surfaced that the murderers may have links to the Indian government, although the investigation is ongoing. This case has further complicated diplomatic relations, with Canada urging India to cooperate fully in the investigation.

Canada and India have enjoyed longstanding diplomatic ties, but the recent developments have strained relations. The expulsions and allegations mark a significant deterioration in diplomatic relations, sparking concern about the broader implications for both countries, particularly in areas like trade and security.
