Mark Carney Meets King Charles and UK’s Prime Minister Starmer
London, UK – Canada’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Mark Carney, met with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer at Downing Street on Monday evening, reaffirming the enduring partnership between the two nations. Starmer emphasized the close ties, describing Canada and the UK as “two sovereign allies” with a shared history, values, and leadership under King Charles.
Carney, who officially took office on Friday after succeeding Justin Trudeau as leader of the Liberal Party, also held a private audience with King Charles at Buckingham Palace. During their conversation, Carney noted they had “much to catch up on,” highlighting the significance of his visit at a pivotal time in global relations.
The visit comes as Canada faces controversial remarks from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly suggested that Canada could become the 51st U.S. state. Addressing the issue during a press conference, Carney dismissed Trump’s statements as “disrespectful” and reaffirmed Canada’s independence.
“We don’t need another country to validate our sovereignty; we are sovereign,” Carney stated firmly when questioned about international support for Canada’s nationhood. His comments underscored his administration’s stance against external interference in Canadian affairs.
