10-Year-Old Dies Following Alleged Sit-Up Punishment by Teacher, in Surya Narayan Nodal Upper Primary School in Odisha.
In a heart-wrenching incident, a fourth-grade student named Rudra Narayan Sethy from Surya Narayan Nodal Upper Primary School in Odisha’s Jajpur district lost his life after reportedly being forced to do sit-ups by a teacher.
The unfortunate incident unfolded on Tuesday during school hours at 3 pm when Rudra and four of his classmates were caught playing on the school premises. An eyewitness account revealed that a teacher, upon witnessing the playful act, ordered the students to perform sit-ups as a form of punishment.
Tragically, Rudra collapsed during the exercise. His parents, residents of the nearby Orali village in the Rasulpur block, were promptly informed. They rushed him to a nearby community center, and subsequently, he was transferred to the community health center and later to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack on Tuesday night. Unfortunately, doctors at the hospital declared him brought dead.
Rasulpur Block Education Officer (BEO) Nilambar Mishra, when contacted, mentioned that no formal complaint had been received yet. He stated, “If we receive a formal complaint, we will initiate an investigation and take necessary action against whoever is guilty.”
The Kuakhia police station IIC Srikant Barik confirmed the absence of any filed complaint. “Neither the child’s father nor the school has filed the FIR. Therefore, we have not registered any case regarding the boy’s death in school,” he clarified.
In response to the tragic incident, Rasulpur Assistant Block Education Officer Pravanjan Pati visited the school to commence an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the student’s demise.
