A 17-year-old juvenile was detained by the Punjab Police alongside 15 packets of heroin, amounting to 15kg, Rs 8.4 lakh in drug money, and a Hero Deluxe motorcycle that were confiscated from his possession, Punjab Police DGP Gaurav Yadav stated on Thursday.
The narcotics are believed to have been obtained by the 17-year-old, who is a resident of Amritsar, through a trans-border smuggling network, with preliminary investigations suggesting that the drugs were airdropped by Pakistani smugglers through a drone, according to the statement by DGP Yadav.
The suspect was arrested after the Punjab police Counter Intelligence wing set up a naka on Ram Tirath Road in Amritsar after receiving intel on the same. The juvenile was supposedly arrested while carrying out a drug delivery, picking up the narcotics from Kakkar village alongside his accomplice, identified as Resham Singh, DGP Yadav detailed.
Singh, who was also named the “Mastermind of the trans-border narcotics smuggling racket” by DGP Yadav, managed to flee the scene and a police manhunt for him is underway, the DGP stated.
“@PunjabPoliceInd is committed to drug-free Punjab as per vision of CM @BhagwantMann,” DGP Yadav tweeted on Thursday regarding the case.
DGP Yadav added that FIR no 6 u/s 21,25,29,61,85 of the NDPS Act has been registered at PS SSOC, Amritsar in relation to the incident.
