Ontario Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie is actively considering entering the upcoming Milton, Ont. by-election once it is officially announced.

“We’re closely examining the opportunity. I’m well-acquainted with their concerns,” Crombie conveyed to reporters on Tuesday.

As for the timing of her decision, Crombie mentioned, “soon,” emphasizing that the by-election must be scheduled before the nomination period begins.

In January, MPP Parm Gill disclosed his intention to resign from his Milton seat to pursue a federal candidacy with the Conservative Party, creating a potential opening for Crombie, who assumed the Liberal leadership post the 2022 elections.

Crombie has made it clear that she is selective about the riding she would run in. Another by-election is already slated for Lambton-Kent-Middlesex before the end of March following the departure of former PC MPP Monte McNaughton.

Given its proximity to her hometown of Mississauga, Milton appears to be a more favorable option for Crombie. During her discussion with reporters on Tuesday, she highlighted her advocacy for two-way GO Train service on the Milton line, a development announced by the Doug Ford government earlier this month.

“It’s a cause that the City of Mississauga and the town of Milton have championed for over two decades,” she remarked.

Currently, without a seat in the legislature, Crombie is unable to propose motions or engage in Question Period. Nevertheless, she retains the ability to partake in news conferences and scrums at Queen’s Park.
