Planning to travel with Lufthansa via Mississauga’s Pearson Airport? Brace for potential disruptions due to an impending strike on February 19, 2024.
Verdi, Germany’s largest union spanning various industries, has declared a 35-hour strike starting at 2 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) today until 1:10 a.m. on February 21.
This strike is poised to significantly impact Lufthansa’s flight schedule, with the airline anticipating only 10 to 20 percent of its flights proceeding as planned on February 20. Nearly 900 out of 1,000 scheduled flights have already been canceled, affecting almost 100,000 passengers.
Reportedly stemming from an ongoing disagreement between Lufthansa and its union regarding a 12.5% wage increase and a one-time inflation bonus for 25,000 employees, this strike is causing substantial disruptions.
To assist affected passengers, Lufthansa has declared that those facing flight cancellations due to the strike can rebook their flights without incurring additional charges. Rebooking options are available through the airline’s official website, mobile app, or by directly contacting Lufthansa’s service centers.
Travelers holding tickets for domestic flights within Germany also have the alternative to exchange them for rail vouchers.
Both Pearson Airport and Lufthansa recommend passengers check their flight status before heading to the airport due to anticipated delays caused by the strike’s impact on flight operations.
Lufthansa emphasizes that rebooking desks at the airport will be unmanned during the strike, urging passengers to manage their flight arrangements through the app or the Lufthansa website.
