Asian Games: Hockey Captain Harmanpreet Singh Named India’s Flag-Bearer of the Indian Contingent

Chandigarh: Indian Hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh and Olympic Medalist Boxer Lovlina Borgohain have been made the Flag-Bearers of the Indian Contingent for the Asian Games in Hangzhou. Indian Contingent will participate in the march past of the Opening Ceremony on 23rd September.

Punjab Sports Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer congratulated Harmanpreet Singh on being named as the Flag-Bearer of the Indian Contingent and said that it is a matter of pride for Punjab and Hockey. He said that Hockey player Manpreet Singh got the honour of becoming the Flag-Bearer in Birmingham Commonwealth Games last year. Meet Hayer congratulated the entire Indian players and expressed hope that in the coming two weeks, Indian players will bring glory to the name of the country in the Asian Games with their great performance.

Harmanpreet Singh, a resident of Timmowal village in Amritsar district, was a member of the Bronze medal winning Indian team at the Tokyo Olympics when he scored the highest six goals for the Indian team. Drag flicker Harmanpreet Singh, a member of the Silver medal winning Indian hockey team at the Commonwealth Games held at Birmingham, scored 9 goals. Under the captaincy of Harmanpreet Singh, the Indian Hockey team won the Asian Champions Trophy this year. Harmanpreet Singh has also won a Silver medal in the Champions Trophy, a Bronze medal in the Hockey World League, a Gold medal in the Asia Cup and a Bronze medal in the Jakarta Asian Games. Playing for the Junior Indian Hockey team, Harmanpreet Singh is also the winner of the Junior World Cup and Junior Asia Cup. He was also honoured with the Arjuna Award.
