Beginning in 2027, California will formally outlaw Skittles and other candy. This follows the signature of AB 418, popularly known as The California Food Safety Act, by Governor Gavin Newsom. It will go into effect on January 1, 2027.

The legislation targets food items that contain propylparaben, potassium bromate, and brominated vegetable oil. It also targets red dye 3, which is included in products like Skittles, PEZ, Hot Tamales, and Dubble Bubble gum, as well as other candies.

The California Food Safety Act stipulates that “a person or entity shall not manufacture, sell, deliver, distribute, hold, or offer for sale, in commerce, a food product for human consumption” that contains the allegedly harmful ingredients.
