Brampton Enforces Strict Ban on Fireworks for Victoria Day Weekend, Heavy Fines in Place

Residents of Brampton are being reminded that fireworks are strictly prohibited during the upcoming Victoria Day long weekend. This marks the first Victoria Day since a blanket ban on fireworks was implemented in the city. The Brampton City Council made changes to the fireworks bylaw in November, which not only banned personal fireworks but also increased fines for those who violate the rules.
Previously, residents were allowed to set off personal fireworks without a permit on Victoria Day, Diwali, Canada Day, and New Year’s Eve. However, due to a significant number of complaints received during last year’s Diwali celebrations, the council decided to crack down on personal pyrotechnics. As a result, there will be no fireworks allowed on Victoria Day in Brampton.
The fines for discharging fireworks have been increased to a minimum of $500, while selling fireworks or failing to comply with the ban can result in a $1,000 penalty. Violators may face a maximum fine of up to $100,000. Only the film industry and the City itself are allowed to apply for permits to use fireworks under the new bylaw.
It’s worth noting that the City previously banned “long-range” fireworks in 2016, but this restriction did not lead to a decrease in fireworks usage. Brampton’s bylaw officers issued numerous tickets on New Year’s Eve following the implementation of the new fireworks ban.
In 2022, fines totaling approximately $38,500 were issued in relation to fireworks violations. Brampton Fire and Emergency Services also responded to 20 fires caused by fireworks, resulting in an estimated cost of $20,000 for taxpayers.
During the Diwali celebrations in October, the city experienced a record number of fireworks complaints. Some residents took to social media to report fireworks being heard as late as 5:00 a.m., well after the City’s 11:00 p.m. bylaw cutoff time.
