Brian Mulroney Praises Justin Trudeau’s Historic Achievements, Sets Aside Partisan Politics

Former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney commends Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, emphasizing that negative criticism against the Liberal leader will be overshadowed by his significant accomplishments. Mulroney expressed his views during his speech at the Atlantic Economic Forum held at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, N.S. He believes that history will remember Trudeau for his remarkable handling of the pandemic and his successful negotiation of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement with former U.S. President Donald Trump. Mulroney, who served as prime minister from 1984 to 1993, spoke highly of Trudeau’s ability to navigate challenging situations and protect Canada’s economy.

Mulroney, who provided advisory support during the trade talks with Trump, praised Trudeau for his vision and steady leadership during negotiations, which ultimately secured a significant victory for Canada. Mulroney acknowledged the adversarial stance taken by Trump during the talks and highlighted Trudeau’s resilience and decision-making prowess throughout the process. He emphasized that history focuses on impactful events that shape the future of a country, rather than the trivialities, rumors, and gossip commonly heard in Parliament.

Notably absent from Mulroney’s speech was any mention of Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre, the current Opposition leader. In a subtle response, Trudeau gestured towards Mulroney and drew a distinction between politicians who aim to destroy and those, like Mulroney, who strive to build.

Lori Turnbull, the director of the School of public administration at Dalhousie University, interpreted Mulroney’s speech as a call for more informed public discourse rather than a veiled attack on Poilievre’s abrasive style. Turnbull noted that Mulroney’s collegial approach towards the Trudeau government aligns with the sentiment of other members from the former Progressive Conservative party.

Turnbull added that Mulroney’s comments might be an attempt to garner support for Trudeau by reminding Canadians of the notable accomplishments of the Liberal government. However, she acknowledged that there are differing opinions regarding Trudeau’s presence and visibility on Parliament Hill.

It’s worth mentioning that Mulroney has also had interactions with Poilievre, including a dinner hosted by the Opposition leader for Mulroney and his wife, Mila, last fall. Turnbull concluded that Mulroney’s positive remarks about Trudeau do not indicate a cold relationship with Poilievre, but rather an endorsement of Trudeau’s approach to leadership and the responsibilities of the prime minister’s role.
