City of Brampton Introduces Youth Cricket League to Expand Access to Cricket

Scheduled to commence on July 2, this groundbreaking initiative falls under the umbrella of the Brampton Sports League, catering to individuals aged 18 and above.

Brampton, known as the cricket capital of Canada, is doubling down on its commitment to foster cricket talent among its youth. Today, the City unveiled an ambitious plan to introduce the sport to more youngsters with the launch of the inaugural Youth Cricket League.

Scheduled to commence on July 2, this groundbreaking initiative falls under the umbrella of the Brampton Sports League, catering to individuals aged 18 and above, providing an avenue for recreational sports participation in a welcoming and supportive atmosphere.

Mayor Patrick Brown expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “As the cricket capital of Canada and arguably North America, Brampton is proud to bring the excitement of cricket to even more youth in our community. Our new Youth Cricket League provides an opportunity for young people to develop their skills and promotes active living and healthy lifestyles. I am thrilled to see this initiative come to fruition and look forward to the positive impact it will have on our youth.”

With an aim to promote physical activity, instill healthy habits, and showcase the transformative power of sports, the Youth Cricket League draws inspiration from the renowned Global T20 (GT20) Canada tournament hosted annually in Brampton. Mirroring the GT20 format, the league will feature six teams per age group, comprising a mix of GT20 youth academy talents and Brampton locals.

Spanning across three age categories for youth aged six to 15, the league will span nine weeks throughout the summer season, offering ample opportunities for skill development and camaraderie. Registration is currently open to eager participants.

Echoing Mayor Brown’s sentiments, Rowena Santos, Regional Councillor and Chair of Community Services, said, “Cricket holds a special place in the hearts of Brampton residents, and the new Youth Cricket League represents an exciting opportunity to further enhance our city’s vibrant sports culture. By investing in new cricket facilities and launching the Youth Cricket League, we are fulfilling our commitment to providing additional amenities and opportunities to ensure our residents have access to play the sport they love.”

In a bid to bolster this initiative and bolster cricket accessibility across the city, Brampton authorities are spearheading the construction of two new cricket fields and pitches at Blue Oak Park and County Court Park. This endeavor aligns with the city’s broader $8 million investment earmarked in the 2024 Budget for enhancing cricket infrastructure and programming.

Brampton’s fervor for cricket is palpable, evident in its burgeoning cricket scene, which boasts 19 cricket sites and continues to expand. With a vision to nurture existing talent and attract fresh enthusiasts to the sport, the city remains steadfast in its mission to democratize cricket access for all residents.

For aspiring cricketers eager to join the league, registration is now open at Brampton.ca/cricket.
