County Residents Upset Over Drivers Not Stopping For School Buses

A driver from Brampton is facing charges for allegedly neglecting to halt for a school bus, following multiple complaints from the community, as reported by the police.

The Middlesex County OPP has responded to calls regarding the increasing number of drivers failing to stop for school buses with activated lights. The police indicate that they’ve received numerous complaints from school authorities, bus companies, and parents, prompting officers engaged in traffic enforcement to either educate or charge the drivers.

During a traffic safety operation on Wednesday, December 20, officers stopped a 47-year-old driver from Brampton in Thames Centre, located about 17 kilometers east of London. The individual is accused of failing to stop for a school bus and has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act with “Fail to stop for school bus – stop arm – meeting.” The identity of the accused has not been disclosed.

The OPP states that the charged individual is slated to appear in an Ontario Provincial Traffic Court at a later date to address the allegations.

In Ontario, the legislation that surrounds school buses reflects a societal commitment to safeguarding the lives of children. The rules are stringent, and any driver failing to stop for a school bus displaying its stop sign or flashing red lights can be ticketed.

The law does not discriminate between directions; whether you are driving towards or from the opposite direction, the requirement to halt your vehicle applies. This ensures the safety of children as they embark or disembark the bus.
