Despite plans by supporters to greet cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu outside the jail in anticipation of the Congress leader getting a remission of his sentence on Republic Day, Sidhu was not released from the Patiala Central Jail on Thursday.

Speculations had arisen in the past few days that the politician’s case, alongside many other cases, was sent for remission, with the Congress leader possibly walking out of jail on January 26.

It may be pertinent to note that Sidhu’s exercise equipment was also moved out of the jail on Wednesday, according to media reports.

Media reports suggested that in anticipation of Navjot Singh Sidhu’s possible release, supporters had gathered around his residence in Yadavindra Enclave, and posters had also been put up welcoming the politician.

Speaking to media outlets on Wednesday, Senior counsel HPS Verma, who represented the politician in court, stated, “I cannot comment on the technicalities but Sidhu should meet you all tomorrow outside the jail.”

On the other hand, Patiala Jail Superintendent Manjit Singh Tiwana reportedly stated regarding the remission, “I have no clue on Sidhu’s release. I cannot comment till I receive the orders.”

Navjot Singh Sidhu is serving a one-year sentence at Patiala Central Jail relating to a road rage case dating back to 1988.
