Explosion At Rainbow Bridge, Niagara Border Crossings Closed

The Niagara Falls mayor's office said the incident involved a vehicle crossing into the U.S. from Canada.

An explosion on the American side of the Rainbow Bridge has resulted in the closure of both the Peace and Rainbow bridges connecting Canada and the U.S., according to Ron Rienas, the general manager of the Peace Bridge. The shutdown occurred on Wednesday afternoon.

The Niagara Falls mayor’s office said the incident involved a vehicle crossing into the U.S. from Canada.

The FBI is at the scene.

On social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, the FBI Buffalo account shared “The FBI Buffalo Field Office is investigating a vehicle explosion at the Rainbow Bridge, a border crossing between the U.S. and Canada in Niagara Falls. The FBI is coordinating with our local, state and federal law enforcement partners in this investigation. As this situation is very fluid, that’s all we can say at this time.”

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said on X that she “has been briefed on the incident on the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls and we are closely monitoring the situation. State agencies are on site and ready to assist.”

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) highlighted the severity of the situation at the U.S. borders in the Niagara Region. The Rainbow Bridge is currently closed in both directions in Niagara Falls, with collaborative efforts from Niagara Regional Police, Niagara Parks Police, and Canada Border Services to address the incident.

Additionally, the Fort Erie Peace Bridge is closed in both directions, and the OPP is in the process of closing Highway 405 and the Queenston/Lewiston Bridge. Sgt. Schmidt advised the public to anticipate significant delays in the Niagara area and recommended individuals in the vicinity to postpone their travel plans.
