Former Canadian Intelligence Officer Calls for More Chinese Diplomats to be Expelled
A former intelligence officer has asked the federal government to expel more Chinese diplomats. He stated that Conservative and Liberal governments have been compromised by China since the mid-1990s. This comes after the Liberal government expelled a Chinese diplomat who was believed to be involved in a plot to intimidate a Conservative MP.
Michel Juneau-Katsuya is a former senior intelligence officer who testified today, May 11, at the House of Commons committee studying foreign interference. He stated that political parties have also been compromised and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service has known about it since the mid-1990s. He called for more Chinese diplomats to be expelled as he believed they have too big a presence in the country.
This comes shortly after the Liberal government expelled a Chinese diplomat who was suspected to be involved in a plot to intimidate a Conservative MP as well as his relatives in Hong Kong in 2021. Michel believes more Chinese diplomats need to be expelled.
As of March 16, there were 178 registered diplomats accredited to Beijing’s embassy and consulates in Canada and an additional five accredited to the International Civil Aviation Organization in Montreal.
As of now, it is unclear what action will be taken with respect to this new development.
