He succumbed to cardiorespiratory arrest on November 14, 2023, at 10:30 pm.

Subrata Roy, founder of the Sahara Group, passed away at the age of 75 in Mumbai after battling a prolonged illness. He had been admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Medical Research Institute (KDAH) on Sunday due to deteriorating health.

Sahara India Pariwar conveyed the news in a statement, expressing deep sorrow over the demise of their leader, ‘Saharasri’ Subrata Roy Sahara. He succumbed to cardiorespiratory arrest on November 14, 2023, at 10:30 pm, following a protracted struggle with complications arising from metastatic malignancy, hypertension, and diabetes.

The statement from Sahara India Pariwar highlighted the profound impact of Subrata Roy’s leadership, describing him as an inspirational figure and a visionary. His passing was mourned by the entire Sahara India Pariwar, with the acknowledgment that he had been a guiding force, mentor, and source of inspiration for those fortunate to work alongside him.

Born on June 10, 1948, in Araria, Bihar, Subrata Roy established an extensive business empire spanning finance, real estate, media, and hospitality. After completing his degree in mechanical engineering from the Government Technical Institute in Gorakhpur, he entered the business world in Gorakhpur before assuming control of Sahara Finance in 1976. By 1978, he transformed it into Sahara India Pariwar, evolving it into one of India’s largest conglomerates. The Sahara group expanded its reach with the launch of Rashtriya Sahara, a Hindi language newspaper, in 1992, and later ventured into television with Sahara TV, subsequently renamed Sahara One.

In 2014, Subrata Roy faced legal challenges when the Supreme Court of India ordered his detention for non-appearance in connection with a dispute with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). This led to an extended legal battle, resulting in his incarceration in Tihar Jail, from which he was eventually released on parole.

The Samajwadi Party (SP) expressed condolences on social media, stating, “Death of Saharashri Subrata Roy ji, very sad. May his soul rest in peace. May the bereaved family members find the strength to bear this immense sorrow. Heartfelt tribute!”

Subrata Roy is survived by his wife, son, and brother.
