Actress Hayley Atwell opens up about her love of India and her connection with actor-producer Tom Cruise.
Actress Hayley Atwell is glad that strong female characters are currently a hot trend in Hollywood since she is not in the mood to play a damsel in distress on screen. She acknowledges that it is her duty as an artist to delve deeply and examine the characters’ frailties.
“No character in any of my projects is used as a gimmick. For instance, take my role from the Mission Impossible series or any other memorable female character from the movie. They are not the same, and I felt compelled to bring items to the set every day that would prevent her from fitting into a particular archetype. You cannot categorize the characters as femme fatales or damsels in need. The British-American actor describes her as being nuanced.
The 41-year-old claims that there is a general desire for more “nuanced and dynamic” female characters that have been better written. There is a phrase that is popular right now: “strong female characters,” she says. We want characters that are complex and dynamic and that represent the range of human traits. We are never just one thing, after all. We change as we age. The filmmakers are now quite receptive to that, which creates the kind of fertile climate for creativity that we seek.
