Indian Prime Minister Modi Raises Concerns on Extremists In Canada with PM Trudeau

Over recent months, Canada has become a notable hub for expatriate Sikhs, where extremist sentiments have gained prominence.

During a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his concerns to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding the ongoing anti-India activities carried out by extremist elements in Canada. Over recent months, Canada has become a notable hub for expatriate Sikhs, where extremist sentiments have gained prominence.

In a statement released by the foreign ministry, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that these extremist elements in Canada are actively promoting secessionist ideologies and inciting violence against Indian diplomats. Additionally, they have been involved in damaging diplomatic facilities and posing threats to the Indian community and their places of worship.

“The nexus of such forces with organized crime, drug syndicates and human trafficking should be a concern for Canada as well. It is essential for the two countries to cooperate in dealing with such threats,” read the statement.

The foreign ministry’s statement also drew attention to the concerning nexus between these extremist forces and organized crime, drug syndicates, and human trafficking. It highlighted the need for both India and Canada to collaborate in addressing such threats effectively.

Prime Minister Modi stressed the importance of fostering a relationship between the two countries based on mutual respect and trust to promote the progress of the India-Canada relationship.

In response, Prime Minister Trudeau acknowledged that he had discussed the issue of Khalistan extremism and foreign interference with Prime Minister Modi on multiple occasions over the years. Trudeau asserted Canada’s commitment to defending freedom of expression, conscience, and peaceful protest. However, he also emphasized their determination to prevent violence and counteract hatred.

Trudeau emphasized that it is crucial to recognize that the actions of a few individuals do not represent the entire community or Canada as a whole. He also underscored the importance of respecting the rule of law and addressing concerns related to foreign interference.

Over the past few years, there have been numerous instances of Khalistani activities in Canada, including protests outside the Indian Embassy, attacks on Indian-origin journalists, the organization of parades to celebrate the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and the display of threat posters targeting Indian diplomats. India has consistently raised objections and protests regarding these incidents.
