Legendary Radio Presenter Amen Sayani, Golden Voice Of ‘Geetmala’, Dies 91

Iconic radio personality Ameen Sayani, renowned for his enchanting voice, passed away at 91 due to a heart attack, as confirmed by his son Rajil Sayani on Wednesday.

Rajil Sayani shared that despite being rushed to HN Reliance Hospital in Mumbai, his father couldn’t be saved, and the funeral is scheduled for Thursday.

Born on December 21, 1932, in Mumbai, Ameen Sayani was a household name, captivating audiences across generations. Initially starting as an English-language broadcaster, he later transitioned to Hindi post-India’s independence.

Sayani gained widespread popularity through his radio show ‘Geetmala,’ a pivotal force in promoting radio listening in India.

Hosted by Sayani, Geetmala became a national phenomenon, showcasing popular Hindi film music and captivating listeners for decades. His distinctive way of addressing listeners as “Behno aur Bhaiyo” (sisters and brothers) became instantly recognizable and widely emulated.

With a career spanning over six decades, Ameen Sayani produced and presented over 54,000 radio programs and 19,000 voice-overs for advertisements and jingles. He also ventured into acting, taking on small roles in various films, often portraying an announcer.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, stating, “Shri Ameen Sayani Ji’s golden voice on the airwaves had a charm and warmth that endeared him to people across generations. Through his work, he played an important role in revolutionizing Indian broadcasting and nurtured a very special bond with his listeners,” in a post on X.

“Saddened by his passing away. Condolences to his family, admirers, and all radio lovers. May his soul rest in peace,” the Prime Minister added.
