Man Falls to His Death after Interaction with Police in Downtown Toronto

Toronto, ON – The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in to investigate an incident where a man tragically fell to his death following an interaction with police in downtown Toronto. The incident occurred early Thursday morning near the intersection of Jarvis and Richmond streets, resulting in the closure of the area for several hours, though it has since reopened.

Emergency services were alerted to the scene at 3:08 a.m., with paramedics swiftly transporting an adult male with critical injuries to the hospital. The SIU, a civilian agency responsible for investigating cases involving police when there is a death, serious injury, allegations of sexual assault, or the discharge of a firearm, released a statement regarding the incident.

According to the SIU, the Toronto Police Service received a report around 3 a.m. of an individual throwing items onto the street from a room at the Holiday Inn Express located at 111 Lombard St. Upon arrival, police officers noticed a broken window on the fourth floor of the hotel. They proceeded to the fourth floor, where they attempted to communicate with a man inside the room from outside the door.

Tragically, shortly after this interaction, a 58-year-old man fell to the street below. Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced deceased at the scene. The SIU has assigned five investigators and two forensic investigators to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
