Mississauga Mayor Crombie Condemns Anti-Pride Rally Planned in the City
Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie has expressed her strong opposition to an anti-Pride rally scheduled to take place in the city. A banner advertising a “Haya Day Prade” was discovered in Mississauga, indicating that the parade, which appears to be targeting the 2SLGBTQI+ community, is set for July 15 at 1 p.m. in Celebration Square.
Although the organizers behind the rally remain unidentified, social media posts have shed light on its anti-2SLGBTQI+ sentiments. The event, if carried out, could potentially disrupt the Philippine Festival Mississauga, which has officially booked Celebration Square on July 15 and 16.
Mayor Crombie, in response to this news, issued a statement today, expressing her profound disappointment regarding the rally. Emphasizing her belief in inclusivity, acceptance, and equality, she strongly denounced the event and any actions that promote discrimination or undermine the rights and dignity of the 2SLGBTQI+ community.
Crombie revealed that she has communicated her concerns to both the Peel Regional Police and the City of Mississauga’s security personnel. However, as Celebration Square is a public space, the event cannot be halted unless the group is found to be in violation of the law.
To ensure public safety and maintain peace during the rally, the police and city security will be present at Celebration Square. Any instances of hate speech or violations will be swiftly reported and investigated by the appropriate authorities, as Crombie assured.
The Mayor urged all parties involved to prioritize peace, respect, and constructive dialogue, advising against confrontations that may escalate tensions. She emphasized that the most effective way to combat discrimination and bigotry is to avoid engaging with or giving attention to such actions.
Crombie pledged to continue speaking out against all forms of discrimination and categorically reject any endeavors that threaten the rights and well-being of the 2SLGBTQI+ community. She celebrated the diversity of Mississauga, considering it the city’s source of strength and vitality, embracing and celebrating people of all genders, colors, religions, and ethnicities.
