More Rain Expected to Drench Greater Toronto Area, Environment Canada Warns
The agency cautions that "heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible."
Just weeks after torrential rains caused widespread flooding in the Greater Toronto Area, residents are once again bracing for more wet weather. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement, warning that up to 50 millimeters of rain could drench areas including Toronto, Mississauga, Oshawa, Oakville, Vaughan, and Brampton starting Thursday evening.
According to the statement, “A low-pressure system is expected to give heavy rainfall in parts of southwestern Ontario and the Golden Horseshoe this evening through Friday.” The agency cautions that “heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.”
The warning comes on the heels of a severe storm last month that saw parts of the city inundated with over 100 millimeters of rain. That storm led to widespread chaos, flooding homes, streets, and major highways such as the Don Valley Parkway and Gardiner Expressway. During the height of that storm, 167,000 Toronto Hydro customers were left without power, highlighting the potential severity of these weather events.
As the region prepares for more rain, residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property from potential flooding.
