Peel Regional Police investigated 711 vehicle thefts in Mississauga and Brampton in January 2023, as the new year began.

From January 1 to January 8, approximately 95 vehicles were reported stolen, compared to only 10 vehicles stolen during the first seven days of January 2022.

According to police, the number of vehicle thefts skyrocketed throughout the rest of January. According to public data, only 13 cases were resolved, 57 remained unresolved, and 641 remain open.

According to police, the total value of the 215 vehicles is $17.4 million. Other items discovered during the search included $100,000 in firearms, including 15 handguns, one assault-style rifle, magazines, and ammunition, as well as an undisclosed amount of drugs, including fentanyl, MDMA, cocaine, and Oxycodone.

Thefts of automobiles are on the rise. It occurs frequently in Mississauga, Brampton, and the surrounding areas, prompting the Peel Police Services Board to host a summit on March 10 at the Toronto Airport Marriott.

Mayors, board chairs, and police chiefs from Toronto, York, Durham, Halton, Hamilton, and Niagara are expected to meet to discuss concrete steps to reduce auto thefts and carjackings while also increasing solvency rates.

The summit will be live-streamed, allowing a larger audience to attend.
