Navjot Singh Sidhu to be Released From Patiala Prison On April 1
Navjot Singh Sidhu will be released from prison tomorrow, according to the latest reports. Sidhu was sentenced to one year in jail because of a road-rage incident back in 1988 where a 34-year-old man was killed in an altercation with the former cricketer and his friend. In 2018, Sidhu was acquitted of murder by the Supreme Court.
The official Twitter account of Navjot Singh Sidhu put out a tweet informing everyone that the 59-year-old cricketer-turned-politician will be released from jail tomorrow. The development was confirmed by Sidhu’s lawyer HPS Varma who said, “He is most likely to be released on Saturday from the Patiala jail.”
Sidhu was sentenced to one year in jail in May last year in a road rage incident that took place back in 1988. On December 27, 1988, Sidhu got into an argument with 65-year-old Gurnam Singh over a parking spot. Sidhu and his friend, Rupinder Singh Sandhu, reportedly dragged Gurnam Singh out of his car and hit him. An eyewitness accused Sidhu of killing Gurnam with a blow to the head.
In 2018, Sidhu was asked to pay a fine of Rs. 1,000 for voluntarily hurting a person and was acquitted of murder by the Supreme Court. The family of the deceased asked for a harsher sentence and a review of a 2018 order. The court added that Sidhu should be imprisoned for “some aggravated culpability” because a person died.
