Off-duty Surrey Police Service Constable Who Killed Himself Identified as Dilbag ‘Dylan’ Hothi, New Details
The off-duty Surrey Police Service constable who took his own life has been identified as Dilbag “Dylan” Hothi. New details around the incident have been revealed suggesting Hothi was under a breach of trust investigation. Details about the entire incident are being kept under wraps for now.
On Wednesday, a 26-year-old Surrey Police Service constable took his own life at a gun range in Langley, B.C. The officer was off-duty at the time and there may have been other police offers around at the gun range. He has now been identified as Dilbag “Dylan” Hothi who previously served in the military and worked as a Surrey RCMP officer.
According to a Global News report citing SPS Media Liaison Ian MacDonald, Hothi was under investigation for breach of trust and had been suspended with pay since August. “It was a breach of trust investigation that was being fronted by the Surrey RCMP and was working its way through BC Prosecution Service,” he said.
As this is a case where police action has resulted in injury or death, the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) got involved. Ron MacDonald with the IIO said that Hothi could have committed suicide because of the allegations against him, but it is unclear at this point. Talking about the police officers present during the incident, Ron said, “We understand that police were there in response to the incident that the individual was involved in, perhaps prior to that incident occurring, but we’re not sure what if any interaction there was between police and this individual.”
It was also reported that Hothi did not have his service revolver and it is unclear if he had a personal weapon.
