Police Unravel ‘Prolific Criminal Theft Ring’ Targeting Transport Trucks and Cargo in Mississauga and GTA

Authorities have successfully dismantled a highly active criminal theft ring that specialized in targeting transport trucks and their cargo in Mississauga, Brampton, and other areas across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

In a press conference scheduled for Wednesday morning (July 19) at police headquarters in Mississauga, Peel Regional Police will disclose details of their joint-forces operation, codenamed “Project Big Rig,” which led to the crackdown on the notorious theft ring.

During the course of the extensive investigation, police managed to recover several stolen commercial vehicles and a “significant” amount of cargo. However, specific figures concerning the number of trucks and the types of recovered cargo have not been released yet, pending further updates from the authorities.

Among the officers expected to address the media during the press conference are Peel Police Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich and Detective Mark Haywood from the Commercial and Auto Crime Unit.

Mississauga, Brampton, and several other GTA municipalities have long been susceptible to tractor-trailer thefts and cargo thefts due to their convenient access to a network of major highways. Furthermore, the Peel region and other locations within the GTA serve as the core of Canada’s largest hub for the movement of goods by truck.

The successful dismantling of this criminal operation is seen as a significant achievement by law enforcement, as it curtails a major threat to the transportation and logistics industry. The operation’s conclusion marks a significant step towards enhancing security measures to safeguard the trucking and cargo sectors in the Greater Toronto Area.
