Punjab Police arrested more than 10k drug smugglers in seven months: IGP

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Headquarters Sukhchain Singh Gill, while at a press conference on Monday, detailed that the Punjab Police had arrested 10,576 drug smugglers in the past seven months under a campaign for the same launched by Punjab Cheif Minister Bhagwant Mann.

The campaign by CM Mann was launched last year on July 5, 2022, and the Punjab Police made 10,576 arrests of drug smugglers under the same, IGP Gill detailed at the conference.

The Punjab Police also reportedly confiscated 1,987 vehicles during the time period for supposedly being involved in illicit drug smuggling.

“Of the 10,576 arrested people, 1,540 are big smugglers,” IGP Gill added.

7,999 FIRs were registered in drug smuggling-related issues with the Punjab Police in the duration, out of which 915 were in relation to quantities deemed commercial, the IGP added further.

IGP Gill also stated that the Punjab Police had recovered 667.03 Kg of heroin, 423 Kgs of opium, 25,548 Kg of Poppy Husk, and 51,49,882 kgs of medical drugs, which included tablets and injections, in the seven months since the start of the campaign.

The Punjab Police also reportedly arrested 160 terrorists and cracked down on 25 terror modules, according to media reports.

The district of Firozpur recorded the most reports with 626 FIRs, and Amritsar stood second with 596 FIRs. 482 cases were recorded in Patiala district.
