A firing between a police party and unidentified masked carjackers in Punjab’s Phagwara region Saturday night led to the demise of a Punjab Police constable stationed as a gunman.
The deceased, identified as Kuldip Singh, was a Punjab Police constable stationed at the Phagwara (City) police station SHO. Singh was rushed to the Gandhi Hospital in Phagwara around 11 pm after being critically injured following an encounter with masked robbers near Kot Grewal village late Sunday night. It was at the hospital that the slain constable was pronounced dead.
Around the time of the encounter, Phagwara resident Avtar Singh and his friend Shekhar Bhanot were reportedly in a Creta car (PB-36J-6240) which was snatched by five armed men. Police authorities were supposedly immediately notified by Singh, who added that a GPS system was in place in the snatched car.
Consequently, an encounter is said to have occurred between a police party led by SHO Amandeep Nahar and robbers escaping after snatching the car from Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar on Dosanjh road. As the cops chased the car to confront the carjackers, the men reportedly open fired at the police, due to which Constable Singh reportedly sustained a bullet injury that led to his demise.
