Smoke from Alberta Wildfires Reaches Ontario, Hazy Skies Observed in Some Parts of the Province

The situation in Alberta has prompted Premier Danielle Smith to declare a state of emergency

Smoke from nearly 90 wildfires currently burning in Alberta has made its way to Ontario, causing hazy skies in the northeastern, eastern, and southeastern regions of the province. According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, the smoke travelled north from Alberta and reached Ontario on Monday.

While images from Earlton and Peterborough show darkened skies, no air quality statements have been issued as the smoke has risen to higher levels of the atmosphere. Warning preparedness meteorologist Peter Kimbell explained that the duration of the haze will depend on the smoke’s trajectory, but it is not expected to persist for too long.

The situation in Alberta has prompted Premier Danielle Smith to declare a state of emergency, as more than 29,000 people have been displaced and 24 out of the 89 active fires are listed as out of control.
