Special Helmets Ordered by MoD for Sikh Soldiers of Indian Army

Ministry of Defence (MoD) has issued a request for proposal (RFP) to buy special helmets for Sikh soldiers in the Indian army. The ministry is looking to purchase 12,730 helmets in two sizes. These have a central bulge and cover the entire head. The helmet is said to be capable of withstanding bullets and freezing temperatures.

Sikh soldiers in the Indian army have been wearing “bulletproof patkas” that cover a portion of the head. Now, the Ministry of Defence has put in a proposal to purchase 12,730 specially designed helmets to fit over turbans and provide the same level of protection as other regular helmets. The proposal includes requests for two different sizes, 8,911 helmets in large size and 3,819 in extra-large size.

As per the proposal, these helmets should be able to withstand 9×10 mm bullets fired from a distance of 5 metres. They should be able to function at temperatures ranging from minus 20 degrees to plus 45 degrees C. The helmets will be indigenous in design and come with a central bulge to accommodate turbans. Some other design requirements include unhindered use of communication radio handsets, personal spectacles, respirators, and in-service night vision devices.

As of now, it is unclear when these special helmets will be deployed for the Indian army.

Recently, a Sikh woman in Toronto designed special helmets with her children in mind as she wanted some form of protection for them while they ride their bikes. Working as an occupational therapist, the Sikh woman realized the importance of headgear and safety. She tried different types of regular helmets but none worked for her kids. She then designed a helmet with a central bulge which meets all other requirements of safety gear. The helmet is now in production.
