Toronto Issues Special Air Quality Alert as Wildfire Smoke Causes Poor Conditions and Reduced Visibility

Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement for Toronto, as the city continues to be affected by haze caused by wildfires. The smoke has not only led to poor air quality but also reduced visibility. The Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks has classified today’s air quality in Toronto as “high risk.”

Residents are advised to be cautious if they experience symptoms such as coughing or throat irritation, and it is recommended to cancel or reschedule outdoor or strenuous activities. Earlier this week, Toronto briefly held the unfortunate distinction of having the worst air quality in the world, mainly due to the drifting smoke from wildfires in Northern Ontario and Quebec.

Environment Canada recommends limiting outdoor time and staying hydrated while the advisory is in effect. Additionally, optimizing home HVAC systems for effective air filtration is encouraged. The duration of the advisory has not been specified by Environment Canada at this time.
