Police Investigate Suspected Hate Crime at Toronto Mosque During Ramadan Prayers

The suspect is currently accused of threatening others, assault with a weapon, and reckless driving.

Further details on an allegedly hate-motivated event that happened last week are anticipated to be released today by representatives of a mosque in Toronto’s northern area. The incident at the Islamic Society of Markham during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan is being looked into by the York Regional Police at the moment.

A 28-year-old man reportedly entered the mosque in Markham, Ontario, immediately after morning prayers on Thursday and allegedly shouted anti-Islamic epithets before directing his car at a worshipper, according to reports. The mosque further claims that the suspect entered the structure, tore up a Qur’an, and unleashed an anti-Islamic tirade.

Police, however, said on Sunday that they had not been informed of these particular information. The suspect is currently accused of threatening others, assault with a weapon, and reckless driving. Around noon, the mosque will hold a news conference to provide more details about the event.

The act is being seen as a component of a growing pattern in Canada of crimes committed with hatred towards religious minorities. The police have stated that they are committed to looking into these instances and prosecuting those responsible.
