Toronto Named City with Most Bed Bugs Once Again, Several Ontario Cities Follow
Toronto has been named the worst city in Canada for bed bugs for the third time in a row. Multiple other Ontario cities are among the 25 most bed bug-infested cities. The organization that carried out the research asked homeowners and travelers to take precautions.
A pest and wildlife control services organization called Orkin Canada shared that Toronto saw the greatest number of commercial and bed bug treatments in 2022. This was the third time in a row that Toronto has taken the top spot in the most bed bug-infested cities. Following Toronto was Vancouver, B.C. at second position and Sudbury, Ontario in third. London, Ontario was not on the list last year but now takes the eighth spot.
Eight cities among the top 10 were from Ontario. The cities in the top eight include Oshawa, Ottawa, Scarborough, Sault Ste. Marie, London, and Hamilton.
Dr. Alice Sinia, a Ph.D. Entomologist at Orkin Canada, said, “Bed bugs are extremely resilient, making them difficult to control. As people begin to ramp up their travel plans this year, it’s important they know how to protect themselves through pest identification and proper control.”
Dr. Sinia recommends decluttering your space and thoroughly inspecting second-hand furniture. While traveling, use the SLEEP method – survey your hotel room, lift and search typical bed bug hiding spots, elevate your luggage, examine your personal items, and place your clothing in the drier for up to 45 minutes on the highest setting.
