Toronto Opening Three Emergency Warming Centres as City Issues Extreme Cold Weather Alert

Toronto has issued an extreme cold weather alert as per today’s temperature forecast of -11 Celsius. The city will be opening three emergency warming centers this evening at 7 p.m. for people in need of shelter and warmth.

Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Eileen De Villa, issued the alert basing the decision on the weather forecast for today which is expected to fall as low as -11 Celsius and the wind chill could make it feel like -17 Celsius. In a news release, the city said, “Other factors may also be considered, such as predicted precipitation, low daytime temperatures, sudden drops in temperature, and consecutive days and nights of colder temperatures.”

Extreme cold weather alerts are called when temperatures are predicted to be -15 Celsius or colder with wind chill expected to make it feel like -20 Celsius or colder. The alerts will be in effect till further notice.

To prepare for the low temperatures and to help people off the streets, Toronto will be opening its three emergency warming centres this evening at 7 p.m. They are located at Metro Hall at 55 John St., Mitchell Field Community Centre at 89 Church Ave. in North York, and Scarborough Civic Centre at 150 Borough Dr. Those in need are welcome to visit the centre and get shelter, as well as access to snacks, washrooms, and referrals to emergency shelters.

Residents of Toronto have also been asked to call 311 if they find anyone on the streets who may need help. They can also call 911 in case of emergencies.

Residents have been advised to check the weather before stepping outside. The city recommends wearing wool or synthetic fabrics instead of cotton and suggests checking in on vulnerable friends, relatives, and neighbours.
