Toronto Pearson Airport Warns of Delays, Disruptions Due to PSAC Strike
Toronto Pearson Airport has warned the public of possible delays due to federal public employees protesting outside the airport. Members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) are on their ninth day of protest which is affecting services under the Treasury Board and the Canada Revenue Agency.
Over 155,000 members of the PSAC are on legal strike and have set up picket lines are key locations to put pressure on the government, in order to reach an agreement soon. This is the ninth day of the strike and according to the PSAC, the protest is part of an “escalation to pressure the federal government to address our key bargaining priorities.”
Because of the strike and protests, Toronto Pearson Airport has warned the public about possible delays and disruptions. In a tweet, the airport shared, “Passengers travelling through Pearson today are advised of the demonstration that may cause delays in accessing the airport. Leave extra time to account for the possible disruption.”
According to Lino Vieira, PSAC Ontario Political Communications spokesperson, there are 500 people attending the protest which began at 10 a.m.
Furthermore, a Greater Toronto Airport Authority spokesperson told media, “as of 11:30 a.m., we are experiencing minor disruptions in our departures curbside areas.”
The PSAC initiated the strike on April 19 because the government and the union could not reach an agreement for wages, job security, and remote working possibility. The negotiations began in 2021when the contracts expired. Workers have been without a contract ever since.
