Following a devastating collision between a semi-truck and a bus on the Trans-Canada Highway in Manitoba, six individuals remain in critical condition with significant injuries, as reported by Shared Health. The collision, which occurred on Thursday afternoon, resulted in the tragic loss of fifteen lives.
In an update provided on Friday, Shared Health disclosed that ten patients are currently hospitalized and receiving treatment. These patients, ranging in age from their early 60s to late 80s, are being cared for at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg and Brandon Regional Health Centre. Among the ten patients, six are in critical care units, while the remaining four are being treated in a surgical unit. The injuries sustained by the critical care patients are severe, with several of them already undergoing surgery, and additional operations anticipated. The majority of the injuries are orthopedic in nature, according to Dr. Shawn Young, the chief operating officer at HSC.
Dr. Young acknowledged the possibility of further fatalities resulting from the crash, stating, “It’s possible.” He further explained that age plays a significant role in the patients’ ability to withstand such injuries, impacting their recovery and overall outcomes. Considering the elderly cohort of patients involved, their journeys to recovery are expected to be prolonged and complex.
In response to the incident, a code orange situation was declared at Health Sciences Centre, ensuring that all necessary resources were mobilized to accommodate the most acute patients. Shared Health CEO Lanette Siragusa emphasized the collaborative efforts of the medical staff, who worked together seamlessly to ensure capacity for those affected by the crash. To facilitate this, 28 patients were transferred from Health Sciences Centre to other medical facilities.
The aftermath of this tragic collision serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of such accidents and the lasting impact they can have on individuals and communities. The medical teams involved continue to provide the highest level of care and support to the injured individuals and their families during this difficult time.
