Ten people had died and at least ten others have been injured after a mass shooting at a dance club in Los Angeles. A Chinese Lunar New Year party was taking place at Monterey Park in California’s Los Angeles when a 72-year-old man opened fire at the people. The police tracked him to a van and surrounded him.
The suspect shot himself when the officers approached the vehicle. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said, “The suspect sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.” He further confirmed that there were no other suspects in the incident and that the motive behind the attack was not yet known.
The officials also informed that the detectives were reviewing the surveillance video and don’t know yet if he was targeting a specific group.
“We don’t know if this is specifically a hate crime defined by law but who walks into a dance hall and guns down 20 people?” Sheriff Luna said.
President Joe Biden has ordered that flags be flown at half-staff to honour the victims of the shooting.
