In a bid to improve road safety and curb illegal parking, the City of Brampton has introduced stiffer penalties for repeat parking violations. Under the newly amended Administrative Penalties (Parking) By-law 333-2013, fines will increase by 50 per cent for second and subsequent offences of the same violation.

The revised by-law, which builds on the City’s recent investment in hiring 38 additional by-law officers and two support staff, targets common parking infractions such as blocking traffic, parking within three metres of a fire hydrant, exceeding the three-hour parking limit, and parking between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m.

With over 86,000 parking-related service requests submitted by residents last year and more than 130,000 penalty notices issued, the city aims to crack down on repeat offenders. The escalating fine system is designed to deter habitual violators and promote compliance with parking regulations.

Jagjeet Singh, a resident of Ward 1, welcomed the move, highlighting the frequent parking issues in his neighborhood. “It’s about time the city took stricter action. I often see cars blocking hydrants or parked for hours, making it difficult for emergency vehicles to access certain areas. Higher fines should make people think twice before breaking the rules,” he said.

Similarly, Vikrant Gupta from Ward 5 echoed the sentiment, stating that lenient penalties have encouraged some drivers to repeatedly ignore the regulations. “The current fines aren’t enough of a deterrent. Increasing them for repeat offenders is a step in the right direction. It will make the streets safer and more accessible,” Gupta remarked.

City officials believe the by-law amendment will enhance traffic management and support emergency services by keeping fire hydrants, intersections, and thoroughfares clear. The new fines are also expected to ease congestion and reduce safety hazards for pedestrians and cyclists.

Brampton’s by-law enforcement team will continue patrolling the city, issuing fines, and responding to parking complaints. The city encourages residents to report parking violations through its 311 service or online portal.
