The upcoming Brampton medical school might see more students than originally expected, a new report states. The Ontario 2023 budget includes funding for a larger student pool but the final numbers for Brampton are unclear at this point. The province has allocated $33 million for creating new medical school spaces till now.

In January, it was announced that Bramalea Civic Centre in Brampton will be getting a new medical school. The announcement came from Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) president Mohamed Lachemi and Ontario Premier Doug Ford, and at the time, it was said that 80 undergraduate and 95 postgraduate students will be welcomed when the school opens in September 2025.

However, the recently passed Ontario 2023 budget includes funding for more students. It will add 100 undergraduate and 154 postgraduate medical school positions across the province over the next five years. These new additions will be on top of the 160 undergraduate and 295 postgraduate spaces announced in 2022.

Brampton North MPP Graham McGregor shared that TMU’s medical school will likely see more students than originally expected because of this budget. “We know there is a doctor shortage all across Ontario, particularly in Brampton. That’s the reason we put TMU medical school in Brampton in the first place,” he added. As for how many students will eventually join the Brampton medical school, McGregor said, “The final numbers of what (Brampton) is getting out of this allocation are still to be determined, but every medical school that is operating in Ontario will be getting part of these seats.”

The Brampton medical school, which will be the first medical school in the GTA area, will be located at Bramalea Civic Centre at 150 Central Park Drive. It will be set up in a 250,000 square feet area which will include classrooms offices, research facilities, and an integrated health clinic.
